The Survival Shovel

Being a prepper we come across all types of gear and gadgets on a regular basis but, today I want to talk to you about The Survival Shovel. I’ve owned two previous shovels. One was a simple spade and the other was supposed to be ideal for backpacking. Both of those shovels broke while being used the 2nd time. They both broke( bent beyond repair) at the handle. I believe having a shovel in your bug out bag or hiking bag is an essential tool. About as essential as a knife. With that being said, you should want to get the most out of any item you keep in your bag. The Survival Shovel allows you to do just that.

Shipping

I received The Survival Shovel from Survival Hax very quickly and it was packaged well. I was surprised at how quick the package arrived.

Packaging

Let’s start off with the packaging. The shovel came in a standard shipping box and within that box was the manufacturing box. The packaging was in great shape. No damage at all.

Survival Shovel Case

The case for the shovel is pretty cool. It’s a black cloth material with a hoop on the back for your belt or backpack. Neither of my last two shovels came with a carrying case like this. The case seems to be of good quality like it can withstand some wear and tear. Having this case makes carrying the shovel with your gear or on your person that much easier and convenient.

Survival Shovel out of case

When I took the survival shovel out of the case that it came in, the first thing I noticed was how light it was. The description of the shovel on the website states that the shovel weighs 2 pounds. I have no complaints about the weight at all. Of course, when building a B.O.B. or hiking backpack you want to keep things as light as possible. Something I do when I am debating on putting a new item into my bug out bag is I analyze its function and usability against its weight. I ask myself, “is it worth carrying this item if its use isn’t worth it?” Well, because this shovel only weighs 2 pounds and is not just a shovel I do believe it is well worth it.

The survival shovel has more than one function. It also acts as a pick ax. Which makes digging a whole lot easier. But, that’s not all. It also has fire starter flint within the bottom handles cap (See images below for visual). With the bottom handle having the ability to unscrew when the flint is located you could also even use the inside of the handle for storage for small items. Which also helps to save on space.

Something I really like about this shovel is how it breaks down. As I mentioned before the lower handle unscrews thus saving on space. But, because of this it not only saves on space but also provides a longer handle than most other spades or shovels. I’ve used several shovels and have done a lot of digging in the past and nothing is worse than breaking your back trying to dig with a really short shovel. This shovel is long enough to make digging a lot easier. When fully assembled the full-length is 2 feet.  But because of how it breaks down you do not have to sacrifice space.

Quality

Now that I’ve talked about the function and how versatile this survival shovel is you are probably wondering if it is durable enough to use over and over again. That’s what I was wondering as well. This tool has zero plastic on it. The head of the shovel is made out of manganese steel with a rigidity rating of 42-46. The handle is also made out of steel and the adjustment bolt is made out of aluminum alloy. The shovel head offers two serrated edges. One is more of a saw type edge that is good for cutting kindling or small limbs from a tree. The other is towards the front of the head which will assist with the digging process. As much of a tedious process digging can be, having this survival shovel definitely made it a little bit easier and faster for me.

Overall The Survival Shovel is easy to use, quick and easy to adjust, lightweight, multi-functional and durable. In a SHTF situation, you are going to need a shovel. I plan on including this shovel not only in my bug out bag but I will also be taking it with me when I go camping and hiking. Survival Hax offers a wide variety of good quality and inexpensive survival equipment.
